In the meantime, to honor the 40th anniversary of his Met debut, the Met has released James Levine: Celebrating 40 Years at the Met, two box sets of DVDs and CDs of 22 of his nearly 2,500 live opera performances - all but two of them available for the first time - and three spectacular concerts. He told opening-night BSO patrons that if he felt he couldn't do his job, he'd be happy to assist in the search for a replacement.
One Saturday last fall, shortly after his return, he conducted the telecast of a Wagner matinee at the Met and flew to Boston to lead the BSO in a Mahler symphony that night. He returned from his latest surgery, though, apparently pain-free for the first time in years, and is now conducting again at his highest level.
James Levine has had a rough couple of years, including several surgeries that have forced him to cancel months of performances, both with the Metropolitan Opera and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the two major organizations he directs.
